It’s time for a grenadine showdown! For years I’ve used my homemade grenadine syrup behind the bar - so when I started receiving requests for store-bought grenadine recommendations, I knew it was time to sample some commercial brands side-by-side. Here are my rankings based on three rounds of tasting: on their own, in a Shirley Temple, and mixed into a simple cocktail with a full-flavored Jamaican rum and lime juice.
My top 4 Store bought Grenadines
Portland Syrups - Okay I am biased here because this is my recipe, now in a bottle you can buy! We put a lot of thought and work into this grenadine. So what makes it so great? Combining pomegranate with delicate rose petals and buds, this Grenadine is sweetened with fair-trade, organic cane sugar and a touch of brown sugar for added richness. The result is a syrup that beautifully balances bright pomegranate notes with subtle floral undertones, maintaining a pleasing tartness while adding body and texture to any drink.
Liber & Co - For a store bought grenadine it’s really impressive. It has a great color to it, looking similar to my homemade version. On the palate you get great pomegranate flavor and just the right amount of orange blossom water coming through. I liked this one best through all three phases of my taste test and am confident in saying it’s my go-to for store bought.
BG Reynolds - This tiki themed syrup was a bit too sweet on it’s own but it held up well in the cocktail. I like that there is hibiscus in here and has a good consistency. It doesn’t overpower flavors yet holds it’s own in a Shirley Temple.
Monin - I didn’t love it as a component in the cocktail I made but I found it tasty in the Shirley Temple. I would say it’s an “elevated” Rose’s grenadine with a similar red color but not quite artificial looking.
