HOW TO MAKE The Tipperary

Contrary to the name this classic cocktail was not made in Tipperary (the town or county). In fact, it was first mixed up in New York. The story goes that a man humming “It’s a long, long way to Tipperary” walked into Hugo Ensslin’s bar asking for an Irish Whiskey cocktail to go along with his war-time tune. The rest is history.

  • Herbal, sweet & savory

  • Comparable to a medicinal Manhattan

  • Nice ‘n balanced

Sips

  • I’m using Redbreast 12 but select an Irish whiskey that you enjoy

  • I suggest using a lighter sweet vermouth here but if you are going to be using a stronger one, taper it back a bit.

  • This will be served up, so if you prefer a chilled glass, pop it in the cooler before mixing.

Tips

  1. Begin with a mixing glass

  2. Pour in 2oz of your choice of Irish whiskey

  3. Add 0.5oz of sweet vermouth

  4. Next, add 0.25 of green Chartreuse

  5. Then two dashes of Angostura Bitters

  6. Add ice and stir for 30 seconds

  7. Strain off into your chilled glass

  8. Express the oils from one swath of lemon across the top & sides
