How to Make a Black Manhattan
Simply put: a cocktail staple, brought to contemporary times. A modern variation of the classic Manhattan, the black Manhattan replaces amaro for sweet vermouth. I’ve been excited about making this one because I wanted to use a particular Amaro bottle that we tasted that predates the birth of this drink by nearly 50 years! Of course using vintage Amaro is not required, so just grab your favorite bottle and you’ll be good. Cheers!
Like if a Manhattan met a cup of coffee.
Subtle bitterness at the end.
Rich orange spice.
Sips
Before getting started, chill your glass.
I use rye because I like the spice of it but you can easily use bourbon here, totally personal preference.
Averna is my choice for the Amaro.
Can garnish with an orange or lemon twist in place of the cherry.
Tips
Begin with a mixing glass.
Pour in 2oz of either rye whiskey or bourbon.
Add 1 oz. of Amaro .
Next, add 2 dashes each of Angostura bitters & orange bitters.
Add ice and stir for 30 seconds to chill and dilute.
Strain off into your chilled glass.
Garnish with a cocktail cherry (or more if you want)
