The Best Green Chartreuse Alternatives
I’ve been in denial long enough - this shortage on Chartreuse isn’t coming to an end anytime soon. Luckily we’ve got options! We’re putting five herbal liqueurs to the test to see if any come close to the unique flavor of Green Chartreuse. If you want to pick up any of these yourself you can here: Chartreuse Alternatives
Dolin Génépy le Chamois Liqueur - 45% ABV
Light yellow in color, sticks to the edge of glass.
Soft on the nose, delicate.
Floral & Stone Fruit notes on the pallet.
You can tell the ABV is lower than traditional Chartreuse.
I’m giving this a passing grade in terms of a Chartreuse replacement.
Elixir Craft Spirits: Iris Liqueur - 35% ABV
Similar in color to the Genepy.
Perfume-y, not herbal though.
Not as much body or weight to the spirit when compared to the Chartreuse.
I can’t say that this is comparable to Charteuse and would likely avoid using it as an alternative.
This wasn’t for me as a replacement candidate, but would work in well in other applications.
Boomsma Cloosterbitter - 40% ABV
Bright green, think “slimer” from GhostBusters.
Good amount of sugar, herby.
Probably the closest to Chartruese in terms of it’s essential oils and their impact on your palette and senses.
Thumbs up, in my view, to use this as a Chartreuse Alternative.
Enrico Toro Torella Liqueur- 38% ABV
Pale green in color.
On the nose this is the closest to Chartreuse of the 5 listed here.
A bit more peppery and vanilla on the tongue but the mouthfeel is there.
It passes as a Chartreuse substitute in my humble opinion.
Faccia Brutto Centerbe - 45% ABV
Color has a bit of a blue hue to it.
Not quite as viscous as Chartreuse.
Zero nose, quite a bit of ethanol.
Very hot on the palette, but the herbs are there.
An adequate replacement for Chartreuse but likely not my first choice.
